Tensions rise in Pima County as question swirl around Sheriff Chris Nanos’ leadership and credibility

PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (NBC, KYMA) - Tensions are rising in Pima County as questions swirl around Sheriff Chris Nanos' leadership and credibility.

Sheriff Nanos faced sharp scrutiny Tuesday during a Pima County Board of Supervisors meeting, where concerns over his conduct and leadership took center stage.

During the meeting, leaders of a local Deputies Association announced a vote of no confidence in the sheriff, citing a loss of trust among rank-and-file deputies and the broader community.

Supervisors later met behind closed doors for more than two hours. When the session reopened, supervisor Matt Heinz pointed to concerns that nanos may have misrepresented details about his work history in sworn testimony.

The controversy follows a recent report revealing discrepancies in the sheriff's resume regarding his time with the El Paso Police Department.

Meanwhile, former congressional candidate Daniel Butierez is now leading an effort to recall Nanos from office.

Supporters must gather more than 122,000 signatures by July 10 to put the issue before voters in 2027.

The situation remains under close watch as questions about leadership and accountability continue to grow.

This comes nearly two months following the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.
