Pete Hegseth focuses on possible punishments for Sen. Mark Kelly
(CNN, KYMA) - Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is weighing his options to punish Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a retired U.S. Navy captain, for allegations of misconduct.
This is in the wake of a recent video posted by Sen. Kelly and five other Democratic lawmakers with military backgrounds, calling on U.S. service members to disobey illegal orders. The Trump Administration has called the lawmakers' comments "seditious."
It's unclear what, if any, charges could be brought against them.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Kelly's consequences could include having his captain's rank and pension reduced to prosecution under military law.
Secretary Hegseth could also attempt to recall Kelly to active duty to face a court martial, but legal experts say doing so would be extraordinary, especially given his current standing as a senator.
Kelly has posted that he will not be intimidated or "silenced."
