Candidate running for California State Assembly District 36 to hold meet and greet

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)- Early ballots have started to hit the mailboxes and candidates continue to meet with communities around Imperial County.

Last week, we spoke to Joey Acuña who is running for California State Assembly District 36. This week, we spoke to the second candidate running for State Assembly Jeff Gonzalez.

"Forget about the Republicans. Forget about the Democrats. That's not what we are here for...that's divided us long enough what we need to come back to is community," Gonzalez expressed.

Gonzalez is a retired Marine who later became a pastor and is now a businessman. He says if elected, he would stop the neglect Imperial County has dealt with over the year.

"What I want to do is number one, and I say this whether I am at war in a foreign country or whether I am leading my company, [is] to bring the stakeholders together...The stakeholders are people of the community...Electives in the community bring them together and come up with a strategic plan...a ten year plan on how do we get Imperial county to its next level. That the number one priority is to listen and then do a plan that is for the people not for Jeff Gonzalez."

Dr. Minerva Kelada, the Chief Medical Officer for Imperial County Medical Group, says Gonzalez is the perfect candidate to represent Imperial County.

"I was impressed on how honest he was...and at the same time there was a lot of issues about healthcare in Imperial County with the new bill...so it was very important to see in that short period I was impressed on how he gathered all the information," Kelada explained.

Rosie Fernandez Reisin, a retired politician, also says she will be voting for Gonzalez stating, "I feel like we haven't been represented in the past in our community and we feel like Jeff Gonzalez by talking to him his goals and what he...you can say people make promises that lots of times can not keep but we are hoping that what he wants to accomplish is what most of us want."

Gonzalez is running against Democratic nominee Joey Acuña.
