Candidates running for Calexico City Council

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Last week, we introduced for candidates running for the Calexico City Council. Now, we highlight three more.

A total of 12 candidates will be going head to head as all five seats will be open in this year's election.

Adriana Marquez is running for the first time.

"I have lived in Calexico all my life, and within the last few years, I've seen the deterioration of our downtown and our infrastructure," said Marquez.

She has been a school teacher for 13 years and has a background on retail management and finance.

She is running for a full-four term.

"Calexico I feel is stuck right now...electing the same people over and over have not brought us any change so that's why I think we need to bring new life in Calexico...new businesses...promote our city... you know make Calexico the destination it used to be before," said Marquez.

Victor Legaspi is running for re-election after he was appointed due to this years recall.

"There are a lot of things that I can implement...I can work on what I can bring in as a council member," said Legaspi.

He served as the interim chief for the Calexico Police Department.

He also says in this short time of being in the council, he has worked with school admin and the community.

Legaspi and Marquez are both running for a full-four term seat on the city council.

“Hiring more police officers and firefighters...in order for us to provide better security for our residents that has to be done...Also bringing economic development is really important to do that and we are bringing back the chamber of commerce...We are going to continue to clean our downtown," said Legaspi.

Lee Sepulveda is also running for the first time.

"I saw an opportunity to try and make a difference," said Sepulveda.

Sepulveda is a professional photographer who has worked with celebrities, brands, and schools. He says he wants to bring more opportunities for the community.

"I've actually given an intro class of photography and so basically what I was trying to attempt with all that is to inspire children and people that there are other oppositions...they are other ways to make it out here that pretty much struck a nerve so maybe I can make more of a difference," Sepulveda said.
