North Dakota Governor Burgum announces presidential run
FARGO, N.D. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is joining the race for the 2024 GOP presidential bid. Burgum held his first campaign event in Fargo where he talked about his biggest priorities.
He announced his run in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. The seven-year leader of the Peace Garden State said the U.S. needs "a change in the White House and someone new to handle the changing economy."
"We need a leader who's experience firsthand that we win as a country when our innovators and entrepreneurs can soar and every single person can grow and thrive," Burgum spoke.
Burgum is a former businessman who turned a small software company into a billion-dollar-deal with microsoft. In an interview with NBC News last month, he said he would invest his own money into his campaign.
He plans to focus on traditional pro-business Republican issues such as economy, energy and national security. He's trying to distinguish himself as a candidate by avoiding culture wars that Trump and Florida Governor, and fellow candidate, Ron DeSantis have taken on.
"Let's get back to common sense. Let's eliminate red tape, get inflation under control. Cut taxes, reduce the cost of living, and help every American realize their fullest potential," Burgum detailed.
