Gov. Ducey makes new appointments to Superior Courts
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Superior Court created a vacancy based on the approval of a new division by the Yuma County Board of Supervisors.
Therefore, under the Arizona Constitution, counties with a population of less than 250,000 persons elect the judges ideal to sit on the bench.
However, when a vacancy occurs, the state's governor appoints someone until candidates can qualify for the next general election.
Darci Weede, Governor Ducey's newest appointment
In Yuma County's case, Governor Doug Ducey appointed Darci Weede to serve as a full-time Judge Pro Tem.
Currently, Weede presides over all misdemeanor criminal matters, including bench and jury trials and all motions filed.
In addition, Weede handles some felony initial appearances, order of protection hearings and civil matters.
Prior to her current position, Weede worked as a private attorney at the law firm of Mary K. Boyte and served as an Assistant Attorney General.
After that, she became a Supervising Attorney for the Child Support Enforcement Section and had worked at the Yuma County Attorney's Office for two years.
During that time, Weede prosecuted misdemeanor and felony criminal matters. Because of that, she appeared in more than 5,000 civil and criminal cases.
More about Weede
Outside of the courtroom, however, Weede is a member of the Yuma Optimist Club, the Girl Scouts, and Yuma 4-H.
Also, Weede graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Justice Studies, and has been a Yuma native for 17 years.
