Unborn child dead in multi-vehicle crash in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Las Vegas Boulevard Saturday afternoon left resulted in the death of an unborn child, and left a child with life-threatening injuries.
The crash, which involved three mid-sized SUVs and a minivan, happened at around 2:20 p.m.
"The [crash was] the result of an impaired driver that took the life of a child that hadn't even been born yet and had the opportunity to breathe," said Lt. Cody Fulwiler with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Traffic Bureau.
Lt. Fulwiler shared details from a crash involving four cars. In addition to the pregnant woman, he says a child also involved in the crash is in critical condition at the hospital.
"The driver of the vehicle that ran a red light failed field sobriety tests and is currently at an area hospital and going to be arrested," Fulwiler shared.
Fulwiler says the suspect will be charged with felony DUI with death, reckless driving and substantial bodily harm.
"If I have not said anything more important to Las Vegas, it is this: Do not drink and drive. Do not use drugs and drive...[this crash was] the result of poor decision making," Fulwiler expressed.
He says approximately 17 people were involved in the crash, which shut down the entire intersection.
"Speed, impaired driving and fail to yield right of way are our top causal factor in all collisions," Fulwiler remarked.
He also says crashes like these can forever change the course of peoples' lives.
"A mother that didn't have a chance to see her unborn child live a life, and another child that is fighting for their life," Fulwiler spoke.
