Two people found dead in crash on Mexicali highway

MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY) - At kilometer 18 on the Tijuana-Mexicali highway, a serious accident was reported, killing a 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.

The vehicle crashed into a City of Mexicali sign. The force of the collision was strong enough to damage the solid structure, and the vehicle they were traveling in split in two.

The couple's death was sudden.

César Bojórquez, coordinator of the Mexicali Red Cross, told Telemundo that the cause of the crash is still unknown:

"We don't know what caused the accident. All we know is that it was very serious. Unfortunately, two people died. But what we are almost certain of is that there was excessive speed in the accident," said Bojórquez.

A motorist passing by initially shared the victims' official identification cards so their families could locate them.

As of Monday, belongings, traces of the vehicle, and some documentation from the vehicle are still at the scene.

Family members of Martha Noemí, one of the victims, have expressed the need to raise funds to cover funeral expenses.
