NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Two people died and more than a dozen others were injured Saturday night when a Mexican Naval training ship struck the Brooklyn bridge, New York city Mayor Eric Adams said.

Nineteen people were injured, Mayor Adams said, in a social media post, "two remained in critical condition and two more have sadly passed away from their injuries."

The crash, which happened just before 8:30 p.m. Eastern, happened when the Mexican Navy ship Cuauhtémoc hit the bridge during a sailing maneuver on a training cruise, according to a social media post from the Mexican Navy.

Cellphone video shows sailors hanging from the broken masts.

According to officials, no one fell into the water, but divers went into the water as a precaution.

"The ship was departing from Pier 17 where it was heading out to sea. The pilot, the captain that was maneuvering lost, I guess, power of the ship and the current, mechanical function caused the ship to go right into the pillar of the bridge," said Chief Wilson Aramboles with NYPD Special Operations.

No major damage happened to the bridge, according to officials with the Department of Transportation.

Emergency Management officials and inspectors continue to assess what damage, if any, was done to the bridge.
