DUI involved crash results in one fatality

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Two vehicles collided head on, resulting in one person dead, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

For further context, the incident occurred on Sunday, November 20 at approximately 5:53pm.

Firstly, a 24-year-old male of San Marcos, CA drove a 2022 Toyota Tacoma westbound on Interstate 8 west of Dunaway Road.

On the other hand, a 20-year-old female of Rahway, NJ drove a 2020 Kia Forte eastbound on the same road.

While the case remains under investigation, the Toyota driver failed to maintain its course and entered the median, resulting in the Toyota colliding with the Kia.

As a result of the crash, the Kia driver died due to fatal injuries she sustained.

The Imperial County Coroner's Office (ICCO) responded to the scene and took the body.

From there, they will release the identity of the victim pending next of kin notification.

Meanwhile, the Toyota driver sustained major injuries, but traveled to Desert Regional Medical Center via Mercy Air.

Authorities then placed the driver under arrest for DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

As of now, the crash remains under investigation.
