Hard left party could take control of Alberta

EDMONTON, Albe. (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - Canada has a proud conservative streak, in fact, you may even say it's the majority.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau actually lost the popular vote twice against moderate conservatives but still won due to the riding system, which is comparable to our electoral vote system. Sound familiar?

One stronghold, traditionally, of conservatism has been the province of Alberta. But due to the big cities of Edmonton and Calgary, power seesaws between the conservatives and the hard left New Democratic Party. Trudeau's more moderate Liberal Party is out of contention.

After a rising drug crisis in the two big cities, as well as the smaller ones like Lloydminster, Albertans threw out the NDP in 2019 and the conservatives regained their power. But now the election, which also elects the province premier (same as state governor), may see the hard left party grabbing back power.

Current premier Danielle Smith, a Conservative, was never even elected. She assumed power after the previous premier resigned due to criticism of COVID handling from both the left and the right.

Abacus Data says 52% would support Rachel Notley, the previous NDP premier, while 48% would support Danielle Smith. This race effects the USA as well, as the continuation of the pipeline hangs in the balance.
