Car enthusiasts attend first Lowrider Holiday Celebration

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The first annual Lowrider Holiday Celebration took place on Capitol Mall Sunday.

It was an event where enthusiasts from across the state gathered to showcase their vehicles, commemorate the repeal of anti-cruising ordinances, and celebrate the creation of a new lowrider themed postal stamp.

Cruising on a Sunday afternoon, it’s a lowrider’s delight. Yet, to do it in front of the state capitol, many couldn’t see it in their wildest dreams.

Even when we got the invite to come, we we’re like, ‘Wait. What? Hey, let’s do it,'" said Jose Herandez of Oakland.

From crackdown to celebration

What started as a crackdown on cruising is now a celebration.

A year after Sacramento repealed its anti-cruising ordinance, this moment marks the first-ever "California Lowrider Holiday."

For seven hours, the cruising never stopped.

"Today was a big day for California to say not anymore...come as you are. Celebrate yourself on Capitol Mall. Enjoy yourself. Do what you do," said Carlos Molina, California Lowrider Holiday organizer.

An unforgettable cruise

Fans of this car culture say lowriding got a bad rap for too long. With the law on their side, lowriders hope people’s attitudes will also change.

Cruising is not only about showing off your rides. For some, it’s a trip down memory lane.

"My father...his name was Smiley and we grew up in the whole lowriding scene and so it was amazing for us to come out here," said Alex Torres of Delano.

A cruise few will forget.
