Suspect lunges at Mayor over pride flag
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - What was supposed to be a historical event turned into an outburst when a woman lunged at the Mayor of Calexico during a pride flag-raising ceremony.
The event, marking the first for a city in Imperial County lasted for about an hour.
But towards the end, a woman from the crowd lunged at Mayor Raul Ureña while she cursed him out.
That's when Calexico Police stepped in and pulled the woman away.
They put her in handcuffs as she was resisting arrest.
“While she was taken into custody, she actually kicked the mayor’s father, knocking his cell phone out of his hands, and from that point this individual was taken into custody without incident,” said Sgt. Sean Acuña from the Calexico Police Department.
The suspect is being charged with three misdemeanors, disturbing the peace, hate crime, and resisting arrest by an officer.
