Istanbul’s popular mayor faces prison, political ban on new charge of rigging tender bids

ISTANBUL (AP) — Istanbul’s popular mayor is on trial on charges that he was involved in the alleged rigging of bids on a tender dating back to 2015. The new trial started on Thursday in Istanbul. Critics say the trial is another politically motivated case aiming to remove the popular opposition politician from the political scene. Ekrem Imamoglu faces up to seven years in prison as well as a political ban if found guilty of the charge. Last year, he was sentenced to prison for insulting members of Turkey Supreme Electoral Council. The court also imposed a political ban. The mayor is appealing that conviction.
