The governor's office says it's her third visit to the border since her inauguration

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas visiting the Tucson Sector border on Tuesday.

This visit comes as the state prepares for the end of Title 42.

It's Governor Hobbs’ third border visit since her inauguration as Yuma apprehensions have gone down by over 50% in the new year.

County Supervisor Tony Reyes meet with the governor, as he is a member of the Arizona Border Counties Coalition.

“When all four counties get together, border counties and talk about the problems, it carries a lot more weight rather than individually," Reyes said.

Reyes says their coalition and Governor Hobbs discussed more than just immigration.

As other issues like water, and broadband are shared concerns among the four border counties.

“Some of the other counties complained that some counties got more money than others, we did, but we invested and put a lot more effort into broadband," Reyes said.

Still Reyes is concerned with the way asylum seekers are being processed, and asked her to pass along a message to Secretary Mayorkas.

“Tell him 'Why are you allowing this processing to take place at the dam?', why don't you set it up at the border crossing where it should be," Reyes said.

The secretary’s plan however is to try and stop migrants from showing up at the border at all.

Instead requiring them to apply for asylum from a government app, then beginning the asylum process.

“To preserve the institution of asylum we are so proud of, but also cut out the smuggling organizations taking advantage of migrants,” Mayorkas said.

Meanwhile Governor Hobbs is breaking from her predecessor in office, former Governor Ducey.

Who repeatedly blamed the Biden Administration for the border crisis, and was sued by the feds for filling in Yuma’s border gaps.

Hobbs says in order to solve the many issues at the border, everyone needs to work together.

“The only way out of this crisis is partnership with state, local, tribal, and federal government, and stakeholders," Hobbs said.

The Tucson Sector is seeing 20,000 apprehensions every month.

Numbers across the border are expected to go up when Title 42 ends May 11.
