Prisoners have alleged connections to "El Chapo"

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (KYMA, KECY) - Three prisoners wanted by the United States managed a brazen escape from a Mexico City prison.

Surveillance footage shows the three exiting a building, into a parking structure.

The trio quickly board a white van and are somehow let out of the garage. Video shows as they drive off into the night, all while lights on the van are flashing.

One escapee is an alleged associate of the sons of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Mexican authorities say the prisoners escaped from a southern Mexico facility Wednesday morning.

They say it is possible prison staff assisted the heist, as escapees had to get through five locked doors.

Ten prison staff are currently being investigated for possible involvement.

Prior to their escape, the U.S. had submitted a request for their extradition. It is not yet clear when this request was made.

"El Chapo" himself was able to escape from two high-security prisons in Mexico, but was eventually captured and extradited to the U.S.

He was sentenced to life in prison without possibility for parole.
