USCIS updates process for accepting petitions for relatives abroad

WASHINGTON D.C. (KYMA, KECY) - Today U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced changes to its 'Petition for Alien Relative' form.

Starting February 1, 2020, the form commonly known as I-130 can only be processed domestically by USCIS.

In certain circumstances, forms may also be processed by the Department of State (DOS)

USCIS says active-duty service members overseas will file for I-130 locally with the DOS, as well as non-military petitioners who meet specific criteria.

DOS may accept Form I-130 if a U.S. citizen petitioner meets “exceptional circumstance” criteria outlined in the Policy Manual update.

All other petitioners overseas must file Form I-130 online.
