Tulsa experiences second homicide of the new year

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Police say a 12-year-old girl stabbed her nine-year-old brother to death.

Tulsa's second homicide of the year shows what Police Chief Wendell Franklin says is a definitive societal problem.

How does society address a child killing another child?

"It's a real tearjerker. I mean, it's really terrible."

Captain Richard Meulenberg says they responded to a stabbing at a home near 64th and Riverside just before midnight.

"When we got there, Tulsa Fire and EMS [was] already [there] doing some life saving measures, CPR, on a nine-year-old [boy]," Meulenberg detailed.

The boy then went to the hospital where police say he died from his wounds.

Police say they learned the boy's 12-year-old sister woke up her parents.

She told them she stabbed him.

"It's hard to think about anybody taking someone else's life. It's especially hard when you're talking about a child taking another child's life and even more so when you're talking about siblings," said Meulenberg.

Tulsa PD then took the 12-year-old sister into custody and questioned.

The Tulsa District Attorney's Office didn't want to comment on this specific case.

They also say a suspect has to be 13 to even be charged as an adult.

"This is still going to be a long process. At this time we don't have a motive. And it's just really sad for everybody involved," Meulenberg concluded.

However, police say what happened in this home is a form of family violence.

Jordan Gustin with the Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS) says it's crucial to give kids a plan to address their safety.

"Helping them know what to do if there is violence in their school, in their home in their community, where to go who are safe people to talk to."
