Crossroads Mission homeless shelter dealing with the impact of severe weather
The Crossroads Mission is in need of essentials for their clients - 13 On Your Side Vanessa Gongora reports
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Crossroads Mission homeless shelter says it's still dealing with the impact of recent storms and excessive heat.
They says there's about 60 people in the family shelter and more than 170 in the men's shelter.
Barbara Rochester, Crossroads Mission Public Affairs Director say that adds up to about 80 loads of laundry per day and they need your help now more than ever.
"We have more families now than we have ever had at the family shelter," says Rochester. "We have a lot of children over there and so we're really happy with the community support of the school supplies for the kids and activities."
She says the shelter makes the kids feel as comfortable as possible when they arrive.
"As soon as they get here, we make sure we sign them up for school so they go to the same school that they were going to so we don't want to make a drastic change," continues Rochester.
The Crossroads Mission is in desperate need of water, snacks and men's shoes.
"Just anything and you don't have to have a lot cause everybody donates a little and that makes it plenty for everybody," says Rochester.
The Outreach Coordinator Griselda Baro is asking the community to come together.
"And how do we solve homelessness? I don't think we do but we can help minimize their struggle," says Baro. "We can help minimize the people out there living on the streets and not having a place to go. Having a place to come here, that would be so awesome."
Crossroads Mission also provides programs to help the homeless with substance abuse as well as lack of job skills and education.
Rochester says though they are full, they are still accepting people. She invites anyone who is homeless and needs a cool place for shelter or is in need of a meal.
Crossroads Mission is open 24 hours seven days a week and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
