Local veteran proud of upcoming holiday
American Legion Commander shares his experience
A man that helps and supports other veterans at the American Legion Post in Yuma, shares his thoughts on what Veteran's Day means to him.
Herschel Patterson, the Commander of Post 19 sits downs at a table wearing his “Proud Veteran” hat.
“It means a day to remember the fallen and remember all our veterans who are serving and very proud of them,” Patterson said.
He served in the United States Air Force from January 1956 to September 1964. Patterson enjoyed his time in the military defending the United States.
As he wipes a tear off his cheek, he emotionally says the three things being in the military taught him.
“Respect, understanding and working together,” he said.
After his time serving, he worked as a civilian but always enjoyed helping other veterans.
Now at the Post, he does exactly what he is best at, helping others.
“I help in the kitchen, I help with bingo and I do various things to help the post raise funds to help veterans,” Patterson said.
With the holidays coming up, Post 19 is looking for more volunteers and non-perishable food items.
However, to the men and women still serving Patterson has a message for them.
“God bless you and thank you for your service,” he said.
