VIDEO: Texas heat power concerns

(NBC) - Texans have been called on to conserve their electricity usage as extreme temperatures continue around the state.

Multiple days of triple digit heat in parts of Texas and Ercot, the state's power corporation has asked customers to conserve electricity.

Julie Fine has more.

Another brutally hot day across the state of Texas putting more strain on the power grid.

"It takes more than one or two years to fix something that has been broken for 20 years."

And while fixes are in place - the future of the grid in a growing state needs to be addressed - according to University of Houston energy fellow Ed Hirs.

He says with our population boom, Texas needs more generators and generators need to be at the ready even if not they're not always called upon to provide power.

"We need to add generation capacity to the grid and we need to find a way to pay the generators a fee to maintain reliability we need to pay them to maintain their equipment."

But if power is added, it's a long term project - meaning for now, conservation remains key - especially on days like this.
