Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization conducts survey on heavy freight study

Open House in-person meetings held on July 13 and 14, virtual public survey available through July 24

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization (YMPO) asks for the public's feedback for alternative options to construct north-south freight rail from San Luis to the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR).

The YMPO Rail/Heavy Freight Alignment Study is evaluating future plans for population, development, land use and the transportation system to construct alignment between the UPRR and the U.S. border, east of San Luis.

Alternatives are developed and will be narrowed down to a single solution that will benefit the community.

Conceptual alternatives are grouped in four geographic areas such as the South, South-Central, North-Central and North.

These alternatives provide a way to identify a single corridor from the given conceptual alignments.

Here are two ways to give your feedback on the conceptual alternatives:

Community Open Houses:

Two in-person open house meetings are being held in San Luis and Yuma.

  • San Luis – July 13, 2022 (4:30-6:30pm)

San Luis City Hall Multi-Purpose Room

  • Yuma – July 14, 2022 (4:30-6:30pm)

Yuma County Public Works Facility

Virtual Public Survey:

More information about the YMPO Rail/Heavy Freight Alignment Study is available on the YMPO website, which will also have a virtual public survey running through Sunday, July 24. The survey will be available in English and Spanish.
