Coach gets redemption after losing CIF match as a spartan -

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - History was made at Central Union High School as the girl's volleyball team had its first-ever CIF win and ceremony.

The girl's volleyball team secured the division five CIF title and had a regular-season record of 9-0.

Watching the team put their rings on was special and to top it all off, things came full circle for the head coach who fell short of CIF title as a student-athlete as a spartan.

Danica Acosta is a sophomore volleyball player for CUHS. She says the drought for this program is no more.

"It's kind of unreal, it is crazy seeing how big this is, we won this and we deserve this," she said.

And now a ring represents this historical accomplishment.

"It's kind of memorable for us cause it's like a trophy but more memorable, not everyone gets a ring," she added.

This marks the program's first title ever. Coach Kristina Bird says it was astonishing to see some of the girls play the sport for the first time and be skilled at it.

"Just to see their commitment and dedication and discipline to the sport, most of them are soccer players so volleyball wasn't even their sport, so it was really cool to see them just fall in love with volleyball," she said.

And the icing on the cake for coach Bird, as a player she competed for a CIF title at the school she now coaches. Although as a player she fell short, she says this moment serves as redemption.

"We actually made it to CIF my senior year when I played and we lost in the championship," she said.

One thing is for sure, Coach Bird and the volleyball team are off to a good start to the summer.
