State Department advises against trips into Sonora

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) Recent violence in Mexico calls new attention to travel warnings from the U.S. State Department.

The Consulate General issued a security alert in mid-October for the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, citing ongoing fighting between drug cartels and crime syndicates, and Mexico's federal police. 

The deadly ambush of three women and six children in northern Sonora has the State Department reminding tourists of that alerts, as well as the Level 2 Travel Advisory it issued in April.

That type of travel advisory urges tourists to reconsider their plans based on certain risks associated with an area.
