Imperial Irrigation District campaign heats up

Candidates motivated to bring change to the Imperial Irrigation District - News 11's Wiley Jawhary reports

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Candidates for the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) are starting to make their voices heard for the June 7 elections.

There are five divisions for the IID and three of those divisions are up for re-election. Divisions one, three and five.

Alex Cardenas is running for re-election for division one. He currently is on the IID Board of Directors and says his experience speaks for itself.

"Experience, I would encourage the voters to look at the candidate's forum and there is a clear distinction between myself and the challenger," he said.

Cardenas is up against Andrew Arevalo who is also running for division one. Arevalo says he would look to protect the Imperial Valleys' water resources.

Division five on the other hand is currently filled by Norma Galindo who is also up for re-election. Galindo also is adamant about defending the district's water rights.

In a statement released to KYMA, Galindo says she has the experience needed to continue to protect the district's water rights.

"Under my tenure as president we defeated the special interests of a select group of millionaire farmers who feel that they should be the ones to own our water allocation and determine how it is distributed to the water users," she said.

Imperial Councilwoman and former mayor Karin Eugenio is also running for division five and says she looks to bring a healthier work environment to the IID.

"I felt like it was time for me to do something different, and the IID right now because of its state and because of the consistent fighting, I felt like I could use what I have learned in the city council to take to IID," she said.
