Why gas prices may be coming down soon

One expert tells us he believes prices could begin to decrease by as much as 50 cents a gallon - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - While it seems like everything is getting more expensive these days, gas prices seem to be taking all the headlines.

However, relief could be coming.

While it may seem like prices have been going up non-stop, the most recent average shows them going down.

One expert, Dave Wells a research director from the Grand Canyon Institute, a non-profit economic analysis center, tells us, he expects prices to continue falling.

“There’s sort of an interesting phrase they say, ‘rocket and feather,’ gas prices tend to rise like a rocket and fall like a feather,” Wells said.

Over the past few months gas prices have risen quickly. The average price in Yuma County, currently sitting at $4.53 a gallon, with Imperial County even higher at $5.75 a gallon.

Alvaro Villagran owns a delivery business handling items throughout the Desert Southwest.

Villagran says increasing prices have put a strain on his business.

“It has affected us terribly in our costs, we cannot reflect that hard on the consumer so we have to work with very small margins,” Villagran explained.

But Villagran, along with other locals, could see some lower prices in the coming months. 

Wells says relief could be on the way as a result of oil prices starting to fall.

“You’ll see gas prices fall probably another 25 to 50 cents in the next few weeks but they’ll fall like a feather,” Wells said.

The break may actually already be starting, as the average in Yuma County and Imperial went down by nine and two cents respectively.
