Will Smith squares up to Chris Rock, wins best actor at Oscars

ABC / Sky News Australia

LOS ANGELES (KYMA, KECY/AP) — Will Smith paraded on stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards after Rock made a joke about the appearance of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith later won an Oscar for best actor for his role in “King Richard.”

His emotional acceptance speech included an apology to the academy.

The celebrity-filled audience at the Dolby Theatre was silent as Smith yelled at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth.”

Rock's joke was a personal hit at Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

She disclosed in 2018 that she was diagnosed with alopecia.

She has often shared the challenges of her hair loss on Instagram and other social media platforms.
