Westmorland home spreads autism awareness

WESTMORLAND, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Autism awareness day is coming up in April and one household is ready to help those with autism in the imperial valley. 

Ryen Gutierrez is 11-years-old and has autism, he wants the public to know it hurts when he is misunderstood.

"Parents don’t give up on your child because they are not talking or anything, just give them time," he said.

Ryan is one of many kids in Westmorland who uses a library that one mom has in her home.

Gloria Brambila in Westmorland moved to a new home that has a library inside of it, now the library is a comfort zone for kids with special needs.

Autism Awareness Day is on Saturday, April 2. Brambila is reading stories to kids who have autism to make them feel better.

She says this is what puts a smile on kids' faces.

"This library was here when we moved and I made it a storytime session for all kids who want to connect with each other," she said.

Brambila is also grateful the City of El Centro is proclaiming April as Autism Awareness month.

"Every child or every individual on the spectrum is different, so you may come across some that may not be verbal, some are, some will work very hard to become verbal," she said.

As for Ryan, his dream for when he grows up is to be around animals.

"I want to be a zoologist because they help animals, you can see them and help them out," he said.
