Local MathCounts competition winners headed for state championship
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Multiple Yuma County elementary and middle school students participated in the 2022 MathCounts Chapter Competition, landed in the top four and are headed for the state championship!
The first round of the competition was held on Feb. 17, 2022.
MathCounts is for enjoyable, yet challenging math programs for United States middle school students to further raise their academic and professional opportunities.
Both written and oral rounds are included in the competition with chances for teams to compete together all for promoting critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Yuma MathCounts Collaboration has local engineers, educators and professionals who help the coaches and students for a triumphant competition experience.
One of the fun aspects of this competition is how "mathletes" from different schools can compete against each other in a speed or faceoff round.
MathCounts was completely virtual with competing teams from Yuma's Centennial Middle School, Crane Middle School, Gowan Science Academy, Southwest Junior High School Ron Watson Middle School and Wellton Elementary School.
A virtual competition was helpful in preparing students even more.
With the results coming in, MathCounts identified its top four highest-scoring students from Yuma's Western Arizona Chapter who will advance straight into the State Competition on March 26.
Those students are:
• 1st place, Angelina Arnn - Crane Middle School
• 2nd place, Samantha Chulamorkodt - Gowan Science Academy
• 3rd place, Owen Steinmetz - Gowan Science Academy
• 4th place, Jon Jordan - Gowan Science Academy
