Brent Sass wins 2022 Iditarod dog sled race

Minnesota born Brent Sass wins the 50th running of Alaska's Iditarod for the very first time.

NOME, Alaska ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - Brent Sass crossed the burled arch in Nome, Alaska after eight days, 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 43 seconds, the third fastest time ever in the 50 years of the running of the Iditarod dog sled race.

It's the first Iditarod championship for Sass whose previous best finish was last year when he placed third.

He hugged his team of 11 dogs Slater, Pink, Garnet, Marble, Morello, Lucy, Woody, Tock, Capone, Pop, Arlo, Kutuk, Jackson and Draco at the finish line.

Sass also beat out defending champion, Dallas Seavey, by one hour and eight minutes. However, the race continues with more mushers currently on the Iditarod trail making their way to Nome. The race finishes when the last musher crosses the finish line, claiming the Red Lantern.
