Nine years ago six lives were taken and 13 people were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Safeway parking lot in Tucson during a meet-and-greet with former Representative Gabby Giffords.

Wednesday relatives of those killed and survivors including Gabby Giffords attended a commemorative ceremony near the site where a permanent memorial is being built.

An honor guard led by multiple agencies rang a bell at 10:10 Wednesday morning to honor the deceased victims and the survivors.

Among the six people killed were nine-year-old Christina Taylor Green, U.S. District Judge John Roll, Giffords staffer Gabe Zimmerman, Dorthy Morris a retired secretary from Oro Valley, Dorwan Stoddard, and Phyllis Schneck.

The gunman, Jared Laughner is serving multiple life sentences.
