Two Phoenix officers ambushed, 7th officer shot in three months
PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY) - Two Phoenix police officers are recovering from a shooting in an ambush-style altercation.
One officer was shot but is in stable condition, and the other suffered minor injuries.
It all started when officers tried to make a traffic stop.
The car fled and escaped from police, but the two officers spotted the same vehicle a short time later and tried to pull it over again.
Then, police say a man standing along the road opened fire at police, firing several bullets at the patrol car.
One officer was shot in the wrist, and the other officer was hurt by flying glass, according to Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.
"This is still very preliminary but it appears the officers were shot by someone hiding in the darkness, literally trying to pick our officers off," Chief Williams stated. "Although officers do expect to face dangers on any given shift, to have seven of our officers and 12 injured in the last three months should be absolutely unacceptable to our community."
The driver of the car involved in the original traffic stop reportedly got out of his car to try and run away, but he was eventually taken into custody.
The shooter was also arrested.
