Yuma County Democratic Party holds ‘Signature Slam’ to get local candidates on ballots

Potential candidates need a certain amount of signatures to appear on ballots, and events like these allow people to get those signatures all in one place - 13 On Your Side's Luis Lopez reports

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Democratic Party gathered signatures earlier today, which will help put candidates for elected positions on future ballots.

The event was called a “Signature Slam.” It was held over at the party’s headquarters on 4th Avenue in Yuma. Candidates have to get signatures from people living in their district to appear on ballots.

The positions candidates are collecting signatures for are essentially everything.

Local level positions like city council and state representatives, and even state wide positions like treasurer and governor.

The party's chair, Xanthe Bullard, says part of the reason the party holds events like this, is actually to make things easier for voters.

“So a lot of these are members who are actually helping to sign the petition, so we’re giving them the opportunity to come down and sign everyone’s petition all at the same time so 12 people don’t have to go to their door get the signature at their house,” Bullard said.

As for which candidates the party was helping, they tell us it was any candidate who is a democrat, or has democratic ideals.
