Millions of Americans are not up to date on their medical bills

Of those, about 16 million people owe more than $1,000, and about three million people owe more than $10,000.

This debt does not include bills likely to be paid by insurance providers.

According to the analysis, people 50 to 64 years old are most likely to owe money.

The number goes down when people hit 65 and become eligible for coverage under medicare.
