Suspect arrested after shooting

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - On January 5, a shooting happened in Gilbert, Arizona near Guadalupe Rd and Arizona Ave.

The United States Marshals Arizona Wanted Task Force was involved.

Earlier that day, the Chandler Police Department identified 38-year-old Andrew Thompson as a suspect in a sexual conduct with a minor case.

Task Force members and officers attempted to arrest Thompson when he was shot after trying to reach for a weapon.

After the shot, Thompson began to listen and was taken into custody, however, he was not struck.

“The arrest of Andrew Thompson, wanted for sexual conduct with a 12-year-old girl, could have ended differently if not for the quick action of the U.S. Marshals Task Force officers. During the arrest, Thompson attempted to retrieve a weapon from his pocket and was stopped with “less than lethal” compliance weapons. Law enforcement is experiencing an escalation of these types of situations where fugitives/suspects are armed and know that if convicted are facing long prison sentences. Less than lethal weapons are utilized when practical to minimize the risk of casualties and to limit the escalation of the conflict”.
