Career specialist says don’t dive in head first when thinking about self-employment

Lea Soto-Graham discusses the pros and cons to starting your own business

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - For some taking orders is just not for them. So, they aspire to one day be their own boss.

But, before rolling the dice, our career specialist Lea Soto-Graham says wage the pros and cons before taking that big leap.

Lea Soto-Graham is a Career Expert with the Goodwill Career Center of Yuma. Goodwill offers training and assistance for those looking for work and those looking to work for themselves.

Soto-Graham says the positives of owning your own business and being your own boss are apparent. First, no one telling you what to do, or hovering over you. You'd make your own schedule and instead of a company making money, those profits would go in your pocket.

But, what's not so clear is the level of responsibility that comes with running a business. Although you'd make your own schedule, the success of your business will rest on your sacrifices.

You'll be responsible for scheduling, payroll, materials, and managing your staff if your plan is to have someone else do the work.

Soto-Graham recommends that those interested in becoming their own boss do extensive research, take courses on business management, speak to other small business owners and meet with a career specialist.

Goodwill offers a variety of in-person and online services to assist future business owners to get ahead. You can visit your local Goodwill Career Center or go online for more information.
