Police: Man arrested in shooting of son over kicking of dogs

A 66-year-old Phoenix man is accused of shooting and critically wounding his 29-year-old son in the chest during an argument after the son allegedly kicked the father’s dogs.

Carl Myrick was arrested Monday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm within city limits.

A probable-cause statement says a witness told police that Myrick argued with his son before he went inside his apartment and returned outside with a gun that discharged once as Myrick raised it, apparently intending to shoot in the air.

Police said the son declined to be interviewed but Myrick said the shooting was accidental and that he loved his son and wouldn’t hurt him.

Myrick remained jailed Tuesday. Court records don’t list a defense who could speak on his behalf.
