Yuma BP: Child clinically not found to have measles

Yuma Sector Border Patrol has confirmed that the eight-year-old girl was actually found negative for measles by Yuma Regional Medical Center, according to Agent Justin Kallinger with Yuma Sector Border Patrol.

Agent Kallinger said the child has strep throat and would be transported back to the Yuma Station by the end of the day.

In a release posted on the CBP website on Thursday, officials said the child had first been diagnosed with measles after going through a medical screening.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A child in custody of Yuma Sector Border Patrol was determined to have measles Wednesday evening, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

The eight-year-old child and her father were part of a group of 39 subjects who illegally crossed the Colorado River together at County 9th Street near Yuma, according to CBP.

CBP said the group surrendered to Border Patrol agents who determined them to be illegal aliens from Guatemala and Honduras.

CBP said they were transported to the Yuma Station for processing and medical screenings where the 8-year-old was the only one determined to have measles.

According to CBP, the child and her father were quarantined from the other detainees, and the Yuma County Health Department was notified per protocol.

CBP says illegal entry into the U.S. poses a number of risks. The arduous journey poses real risks to life and safety. Migrants are encouraged to immigrate legally through ports of entry and warned putting their lives into the hands of transnational criminal organizations who profit from human smuggling is a dangerous decision.

CBP says Yuma Sector is currently more than double its recommended detention capacity with more than 1000 illegal aliens in custody. Most of those in custody are family groups and unaccompanied minors from Central America.
