31-year old mother attempts to drown her child in pond

It sounds like something out of a horror movie. A 31-year-old mother tried to drown one of her two children in a pond at Bucklin park to get the “demons out of him”.

El Centro police call logs show the mother. identified by the Imperial Valley Press as 31-year Christina Flores, dragged her son to the pond as witnesses saw the other child was seen running away.

Felix Ruiz, who is a regular at Bucklin Park, was shocked to hear this happened in his own back yard.

Ruiz said, “I thought it was insane. How would somebody do that to their own children you know.”

Yvette Garcia, an official from the Imperial County Child Abuse Council, said community members need to be aware of the signs to look out for when a parent is struggling with issues or harming a child.

“Whenever you get that feeling. Whenever you have that feeling. Whenever you have that feeling of something that’s just not right. When someone says something that you’re not sure of or make you uneasy please respond to it,” Garcia said.

A witness called law enforcement who arrested the mother before she could do more harm.

“If those community members had not spoken out or stop what was happening, that child’s life probably would have ended. That child would not be here with us,” said Garcia.

Garcia said that if any parent has an urge to abuse their child, they should seek help.

Garica added, “When we see these things or hear these things whether it’s in our community or others we have to really respond and prevent these things from happening so these children do not have to suffer.”

The children were taken into protective services and the mother is in Imperial County Jail and charged with suspicion of child abuse.
