Rep. Duncan Hunter’s corruption trial delayed

A judge has delayed Congressman Duncan Hunter’s corruption trial, moving it closer to the date of California’s primary election.

The San Diego Union-Tribute reports U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan changed the date to January 22 after a request from defense attorneys. They want to give an appeals court more time to rule on Hunter’s request to have the case dismissed. The appeals court hears oral arguments on that request on December 12, 2019.

Judge Whelan says he wants Hunter’s trial finished before California’s March 3 primary election.

The 42-year-old Congressman is accused of using campaign funds for personal expenses, including groceries and family vacations.

Hunter faces two Republicans challengers in the primary; former Congressman Darrell Issa , and radio personality Carl DeMaio .

Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is also running for the seat.
