Influx of migrant children being dropped off at Mexicali shelters

The Calexico-based non-profit organization, Border Kindness, has teamed up with a shelter Cobina in Mexicali to help out more than 50 migrant children that were dropped off last week.

The shelter provides immediate medical attention to these families including dental treatment, doctor visits and even treating parasites. The organization said they are facing other challenges including not having enough food and even some children arriving with undiagnosed illnesses.

“They arrive here with very difficult situations that are very complicated. Some arrive very sick, others arrive not well-fed, and some with illnesses,” said Nallely Llerenas, Director of Mexico’s Border Kindness.

In the case of a Honduran mother and her 8-year-old daughter, they arrived 15 days ago with the goal to seek asylum into the United States. But her daughter has seen a doctor due to financial reasons.

“The doctors in Honduras are really expensive and we do not have the money to be able to take her to get a check-up,” said Gloria Orellana, a Honduran mother.

Despite the challenges that both the shelter and the Border Kindness face, that will not stop them from lending a helping hand.

“Some of these kids have lost both parents and they also come with the intentions of having a better life or to reunite with loved ones In the U.S,” said Orellana’
