Yuma Road Report, Week of March 15

Here is a list of the upcoming road projects scheduled for the busy streets of Yuma:

City Projects

Special event: Main Street Closure March 16

Main Street will be closed for the City of Yuma Heritage Festivals’ Music on Main and St. Patrick’s Day block party that will take place on Saturday, March 16. The road will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday and will reopen by midnight.

4th Avenue, 32nd Street to 40th Street

4th Avenue is under construction between 32nd Street and 40th Street. Southbound traffic will be one-way at all times until the new pavement section is completed. Southbound through traffic is encouraged to use Arizona Avenue and Avenue A as alternate routes. Northbound traffic is detoured along 40th Street to Avenue A. Pedestrians are urged to use caution while walking near the work zone. UPDATE: Due to the results of an inspection, completion for this project is now estimated to occur in mid-April.

32nd Street at Big Curve area

The City’s Public Works crews will be working on the signal on 32nd Street at the Big Curve, leading to the traffic signal being shut off for four days. The projected date has been confirmed to be Mar. 19. Traffic will be allowed to continue through the Big Curve, with two lanes open in each direction except for at the mall driveway (one lane in each direction). The project is expected to be completed by Mar. 22. Please use caution while driving in the area.

City Street Maintenance

Asphalt maintenance operations for the week of March 18-24 are as follows:

Crack seal operations:

Avenue 8E, 34th Street to 40th Street.

Ocotillo 4B subdivision.

Rancho Sereno subdivision.

Road sealing

Desert Oasis subdivision.

Castle View, south end only

Cielo Verde subdivision

Slurry Seal

South Frontage Road from Avenue 8-1/2E to the south of Mesa Avenue (weekend work only)

S. Avenue 8E from E. 32nd Street to E. 40th Street (Sunday, March 24)

Spring slurry seal program

The City will apply slurry seal between March 23 and April 11. Work typically occurs during the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The project will include the following streets and subdivisions.

Avenue 5 ½E; 40th Street to 44th Street, 3/23 to 4/11
Avenue 3 ½ E; 30th Street to northern terminus,3/23 to 4/11
Avenue 6E; 40th Street to 42nd Place, 3/23 to 4/11
Avenue 7E; 31st Place to 32nd Street,3/23 to 4/11
Avenue 8E; 32nd Street to 40th Street, 3/23 to 4/11
8th Avenue; 22nd Street to 24th Street, 3/23 to 4/11
Avenue 10E; 28th Street to North Frontage Road, 3/23 to 4/11
South Frontage Road; Avenue 8½E to 10E, 3/23 to 4/11
Arizona Avenue; 16th Street to Palo Verde Street, 3/23 to 4/11
36th Street; Avenue 3½E to end of pavement, 3/23 to 4/11

Slurry seal is a mixture of asphalt emulsion, water, sand, and concrete. It provides a cost-effective new wearing surface that can extend the life of the pavement by at least five years.

Other utility projects and encroachment permits

16th Street, 2nd Avenue – night work

Night closures will take place on 16th Street near its intersection with 2nd Avenue starting as early as March 15 through May 17.

1st Street and Avenue B (Century Link)

Century Link is working at the corner of 1st Street and Avenue B, requiring lane closures along the 1st street near that intersection. The 60-day project should be complete by early May.

4th Avenue, Catalina Drive – night work

Lane closures will be in place along 4th Avenue near Catalina Drive beginning as early as March 25 and finish by May 31. Traffic control devices will be posted and a reduced speed limit will be in place. This traffic control will be active only between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

24th Street, 17th Avenue to 19th Drive

Crews will be working in the Valley Plaza’s parking lot to remove and replace asphalt for approximately five days, completing by the end of March. The work will call for lane and sidewalk closures along 24th Street between 17th Avenue and 19th Drive.

Madison Avenue, 2nd Street (Century Link)

Lanes will be closed/impacted on Madison Avenue near its intersection with 2nd Street starting around the end of March, through the last week in April. During this time, drivers should expect to keep left and the sidewalk will be closed to foot traffic.

32nd Street, Barkley Ranch Avenue

A project near Crane Middle School (4450 W. 32nd Street) is being extended through April and will impact traffic on 32nd Street (Co. 11th Street) from S. Barkley Ranch Avenue to S. 45th Avenue. The traffic control in place will be extended to April 5 and will require drivers to stay left when traveling west to avoid the shoulder work.

13th Street at 1st Avenue (APS)

Arizona Public Service (APS) crews will be conducting underground work along 13th Street at 1st Avenue. The 3-day project is scheduled to start the first week of April. Drivers will see signs to keep left of avoiding shoulder work and for the safety of the workers.

2nd Avenue and Giss Parkway

Lane closures will be in place along Court Street near 2nd Avenue for a project that requires manhole access in the roadway. Additionally, there will be lane closures on Giss Parkway near 2nd Avenue for similar reasons. Both locations will have a reduced speed limit of 25 mph in place. The project is to be completed by April 12.

4th Avenue, 32nd to 40th streets

APS is pulling wire through an underground conduit for a new street light along 4th Avenue, leading to closure between 32nd and 40th streets. The work is to be completed by Apr. 5. While the project is underway, there will be shoulder work along 4th Avenue and traffic control devices in place near this area. Drivers are asked to use caution near the work zone.

Madison Avenue, near 1st Street (Century Link)

Century Link crews will make repairs to buried telephone cable along Madison Avenue in the north end. This monthlong project will cause lane closures; parking will be restricted along Madison Avenue and sidewalk closures will occur in places. Update: Additionally, crews will be working on plumbing and tying in a water hydrant in this same area for the Home 2 Suites hotel. While the project is underway, there will be a complete closure on Madison Avenue near Jones Street.

3rd Street, 4th Avenue – Avenue A (Century Link)

Century Link crews are starting a 5-month project to repair telephone cable along 3rd Street, between 4th Avenue and Avenue A. The project which will involve accessing manholes will cause lane closures and in some areas sidewalk closures.

Avenue C and 28th Street (new completion date)
Avenue C remains closed near its intersection with 28th Street as crews install a new sewer and water line, requiring road closures and detours in the area. Traffic control devices will be in place through April 1. Alternate routes include Avenue B and Avenue D.

Avenue B, 8th Street

Century Link is starting a 60-day project this week on Avenue B at 8th Street. A short section of the right southbound lane will be closed during the project. The work is expected to finish in early April.

2nd Street, near courthouse (Century Link)

Century Link will be installing fiber in front of the Yuma County Courthouse downtown. The 60-day project should be complete around early April and will require the sidewalk to be closed along 2nd Street. Parking spaces along 2nd Street in that area may not be available during work.

24th Street at Mary Avenue (Century Link)

Century Link is working on a project at the northeast corner of Mary Avenue and E. 24th Street, requiring lane closures. Drivers will be directed to keep left when traveling south of Mary Avenue. The project is slated to finish in April.

16th Street, near Avenue C
Crews will be working on 16th Street near Avenue C, which is in close proximity to a local elementary school (H.L. Suverkrup). The 60-day project will include lane closures and other possible traffic restrictions.

Arizona Avenue, near Crossroads Mission
A permit has been extended to a contractor working on Arizona Avenue’s roadway near the Crossroads Mission, requiring a full closure. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the closures. Please use an alternate route. The road will reopen in April.

24th Street and Avenue B

Shoulder work is underway on the northeast corner of the 24th Street and Avenue B intersection. The 30-day project will require lane closures, reduced speed limits in the area, and possible sidewalk closures through April 11.

Avenue B, 7th Street

A one-day closure will be required on March 15 on Avenue B near 7th Street, which neighbors Sunset Community Health Center and Immaculate Conception Church. Traffic along Avenue B will have a reduced speed limit and lane shifts in place, as crews access a manhole. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, as this could cause delays in traffic. Signs will be posted to alert traffic to the lane closures.

U.S. Highway 95, Avenue 7E to Fortuna Road (ADOT)

ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration are repairing the pavement on U.S. Highway 95 between Avenue 7E and Fortuna Road. The project consists of applying a rubberized chip seal coat on U.S. 95. In addition, the work includes applying a fog coat, replacing existing pavement markings and other miscellaneous work. The project is scheduled to begin this spring with completion anticipated in summer 2019.

Interstate 8 from Yuma to milepost 134 (ADOT)

ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration are repairing the pavement along Interstate 8 between Yuma and Maricopa counties. The project consists of applying a fog seal and restriping I-8 in three areas: I-8 from milepost 0.56 to 20; mileposts 66 to 72; mileposts 115 to 134. The project is scheduled to begin this spring with completion anticipated in summer 2019.

The following restrictions will occur in Yuma from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Wednesday, March 27, and continuing through Friday, March 29.

I-8 will be narrowed to one lane in both directions between Giss Parkway and Foothills Boulevard (Exit 14). Motorists should anticipate a 3-mile lane restriction while crews progress through the work zone.

The west- and eastbound I-8 off- and on-ramps at 16th street and Fortuna Road will close intermittently between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

The following west- and eastbound I-8 off- and on-ramps will close intermittently.

Giss Parkway
Avenue 3E
Araby Road
Avenue 8-1/2E
Foothills Boulevard

A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place. Alternate routes include using the preceding I-8 on-ramp or exit in the work zone. Motorists should allow extra travel time and plan for possible delays while work is underway.
