El Centro Sector Border Patrol apprehends migrants
About fourteen- miles away from the Calexico port of entry, El Centro Sector Border Patrol apprehended a family that crossed into the United States unauthorized.
“It’s not the typical fence, it’s a barricade that anyone can go through and under, but we have those to deter and prevent cars from coming through the area,” Border Patrol Agent, Jose Enrique.
Agent Enrique said this area is commonly used by migrants and among the three agents caught was a mother, Sonia Robles, who left her country of Guatemala with her sister and 4-year daughter. Robles said she took the risk because she fears for her life.
“They wanted to kill in our country and that’s why we came over here,” said Robles.
Robles and her family traveled for 26 days from Central America with the hope to seek asylum into the United States.
“We want to seek asylum into the United States because we can’t go back to our country, it’s not safe for us anymore,” said Robles.
But now that they have been arrested, they will be taken to headquarters for further processing.
“They will be fingerprinted, their pictures will be taken and that’s to check if there’s anything in their background that is suspicious,” said Enrique.
During the process, the family will have to file for credible fear but agent Enrique said it’s still not guaranteed.
“If they file for credible fear and go through the asylum process and if the asylum isn’t granted then all of them will be deported back to their country of origin,” said Enrique.
Agents said that the new infrastructure along the border could only help stop migrants from crossing into the country illegally and the new 11- mile border wall project will have the same impact as the new 2.2-mile border that was in place last year.
