BP: Familiar face driving unfamiliar car exposes human smuggling attempt

Port director says "incident highlights the attention to detail" agents have

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The U.S. Border Patrol recently caught a 40-year-old woman attempting to smuggle a 39-year-old Mexican national.

Douglas Area Port Director Jeffrey A. Wilson said it began Friday morning when an officer recognized a woman who frequently passes through the U.S.-Mexico border.

However, the Volkswagen Beetle she was driving stood out to the officer since she normally drives a different vehicle. This prompted agents to pull her car into secondary inspection.

There, officers opened the trunk to find a man stashed inside without a way of getting out.

"This incident highlights the attention to detail of our officers, and the effort they put forth daily to keep the residents of our bi-national communities safe," shared Wilson.

Border Patrol processed the driver and passenger, turning them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements’ Homeland Security Investigations.
