Kofa Junior ROTC Rifle Team #1 in State

The Marine Corps Junior ROTC rifle team at Kofa High school placed on top of its competitors throughout Arizona during this year’s regional championships. This is the rifle team’s first time back in two years with senior military instructor Major Todd Birney.

“Throughout the eight Marine Corps Junior ROTC’s that are in Arizona we took top five in individuals and as a team, we took first in the state of Arizona,” Maj. Birney said.

It was also the first time the rifle team had ever been invited to the Marine Corps Junior ROTC regional championships. There are 369 teams throughout the nation that competed. Kofa’s team placed 27th overall but was first in Arizona.

” I am absolutely happy how fast we shot up this year,” Said Nikolas Wissler a Cadet Staff Sergent and Junior at Kofa High School.”We have earned so many trophies.”

Cadet Wissler single-handedly placed 34th out of 1,703.

the Marine Coprs Junior ROTC program at Kofa High is a program focused on building leadership and proper citizenship according to Maj. Birney.

The Kofa team is the only one of its kind in Yuma County.
