Lint and grime build-up cause fire in Yuma duplex home

Occupants in a duplex home were evacuated after lint and grime build-up caused a ceiling bathroom fire just before 7 p.m. Monday night, according to the Yuma Fire Department.

YFD said all occupants and pets were evacuated safely and firefighters were able to contain the damage to the ceiling and attic areas near the fire’s origin.

Due to damaged wiring, YFD said residences are not to live in the home until repairs have been made.

The American Red Cross was called to assist residents.

YFD said lint and grime can build up in any exhaust/ventilation fan and are a common cause of residential fires.

Ensure your exhaust/ventilation fans are cleaned frequently to avoid lint buildup and always remember to turn the switch off when you leave the bathroom.

If your fan is showing signs of malfunction (for example, unusual noises like buzzing or humming, inconsistent operation, or fails to turn on), YFD says to turn it off and do not turn back on until it can be repaired or replaced.
