Local elementary school raises money for cancer

In tonight’s Making a Difference, we are highlighting a school raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Arizona. Desert View Academy participates annually in a student series called,”Pennies for Patients.” A three-week service learning program where students collect change to support the LLS mission.

The mission raises money to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. On August 16th, Desert View Academy was awarded the title of number one school in the state to raise the most money. We spoke to the principal to hear how much they have raised in total over the years for the program and what celebratory acts she has gone through once their annual goal is met each year.

‘”Well we are just excited to be a part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society again. In the state of Arizona, we have given over $100,000 dollars to LLS, through the ‘Pennies for Patients program.’ I’ve kissed a pig, I’ve had my head shaved, I’ve sumo wrestled. I’ve been in a dunk tank and I’ve been slimmed so the kiddos love to do something to their principal when they reach their goal,”‘ said Debra Weigel, Principal of Desert View Academy.

This year, LLS and Desert View Academy are asking for your support. Starting February 1st, the program will be taking donations. The schools goal for the month of February is to raise 12,000 dollars for the “Pennies for Patients” program.
