Imperial Valley remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Imperial Valley honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King with a re-enactment of his famous “I have a Dream” speech on the steps of the county courthouse.

Hosted by groups such as the Martin Luther King Commemorative Committee and Black Lives Matter, dozens of crowd members also watched speeches given by community leaders influenced by the civil rights leader’s work.

One organizer hopes the re-enactment will inspire others to continue Dr. King Jr.’s fight against injustice.

Marlene Thomas, Coordinator of the Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee, said, “It’s one thing to come out and honor. But we want action behind that honoring. So we want people to get re-engaged, charged up, uplifted and go out and make a difference in someone’s life.”

The re-enactment has been a valley tradition for the past few decades.
