Locals recognized for keeping Dr. King’s ideals alive

Nine Imperial Valley community members were given the Stone of Hope Award on Saturday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Event Organizer Marlene Thomas said, “The one thing that stands out is the gift of giving that they all have. They have a true gift of giving to others and making a difference.”

They come from different backgrounds: Law enforcement, parenthood agencies, education, sports, electrical trade and newspaper publishing.

“What they are doing in the community that may have an effect on improving the quality of life for our community,” Thomas said.

Attendees said the recipients represent King’s ideals of respect and giving back to the community.

Dr. Martha Garcia, Imperial Valley College President, said, “It’s really a reminder of what we stand for as a community. If we want to contribute to the enhancement of our community, it is really through respect and equality and affording the opportunities to everybody.”

IID Director Alex Cardenas said, “We’re honoring people in our community who have shown respect to those who are in need of help.”

They said the recipients are part of King’s legacy.

“We are benefiting from the human dignity component and how important it is to treat human beings in our community with respect and dignity,” Cardenas said.

This is the 5 th Annual Stone Sward ceremony for those everyday heroes making a difference locally.

“This is just a different type of saying thank you and recognizing people,” Thomas said.
