The 116th Congress being sworn in causes local “Day of Action”

Thursday became a historic day as the 116th Congress was sworn in and cities across the country participated in what was called, “A Day of Action.”

News 11 spoke to Yuma residents as they held their signs in support of today’s Congressional news.

There were a lot of firsts at the State Capitol which included a record number of women being sworn in. Democrats took control of the House and Nancy Pelosi was elected as House speaker.

A local group, Yuma County Indivisible, were out in full force on 4th Avenue showing their support of the Democrat elects. This comes as President Trump’s partial government shutdown entered its 13th day. We spoke to the leader of the group to hear her thoughts on today’s news.

“We are here, we are the ones that elected the Democrats. That we are paying attention and that we will hold them accountable. Since we don’t have a congressional office here in Yuma, we are kind of taking it to the street. We do this actually once a week or a similar action, just to let people know that there is a progressive voice in Yuma and that they are not alone,” said Liz Haskell, Yuma County Indivisible member.

Pelosi previously served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011. She was the nation’s first female House speaker and remains the only woman to ever serve that position.
